About Cary Cardiology

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. Over 2 million Americans will suffer a cardiovascular event, such as heart attack or stroke annually. Early detection and treatment have been shown to decrease death and long term disability resulting from such undesirable, and often preventable events.

Cary Cardiology PA has been serving the Triangle and its communities for over 25 years. The Practice originated with Dr. Priyavadan M. Shah running a solo practice back in the Mid-80's at MacGregor Village. He was joined by Dr. Dhiren N. Shah in 1991 and the office moved to Keisler Drive. As Cary began to grow, they responded to meet the cardiac needs of the community. During the summer of 1998 Dr. Garimella, Dr. Sunil Desai and Dr. Pratik Desai in 2000 and Dr. Joshua Macomber in 2007.

Cary Cardiology, PA has become widely acknowledged as a pioneering force in innovative cardiovascular practices. Cary Cardiology, PA has been recognized by the Triangle, as a leader in cardiovascular care. The current six member group brings together a wealth of highly qualified and diversely trained cardiologists. Each physician has received advanced fellowship training, in leading nationally recognized programs, in one or more areas of preventive cardiology and health maintenance, cardiac rehabilitation, diagnostic cardiac testing, Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD), interventional cardiology, and nuclear cardiac imaging. Their Cardiology Board Certified physicians serve in medical staff leadership positions in local area hospitals and organizations, as well as, conducting ongoing inpatient and outpatient research projects.

Cary Cardiology, PA is unique in being able to provide a full spectrum of comprehensive cardiology services. Heart problems, such as hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, cardiomyopathy, congestive heart failure, abnormal heart rhythms, and circulatory problems are thouroughly investigated and optimally treated with cutting edge cardiovascular care. Lifestyle changes and risk factor modification are routinely stressed, in an effort to minimize cardiovascular disease progression, and under ideal conditions, to foster disease regression.

Cary Cardiology, PA utilizes a wide array of advanced noninvasive testing to aid in the prompt diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular problems, including walking and nonwalking stress testing, cardiopulmonary stress testing, nuclear cardiac imaging, echocardiography, transesophageal echocardiography, vascular testing and heart rhythm monitoring. When further information is needed to precisely pinpoint the nature of an underlying abnormality, invasive cardiac assessment such as cardiac catheterization and intravascular ultrasound may be undertaken.

Numerous state of the art interventional cardiac procedures, including intravascular ultrasound, balloon angioplasty, coronary atherectomy, intracoronary stent placement, coronary brachytherapy, and implantation of pacemakers, as well as internal defibrillators, may be performed to correct the underlying problem, while being minimally invasive and avoiding open heart surgery.

Appointments and Referrals

APPOINTMENTS can be scheduled at your convenience Monday through Friday 8 am. to 5 PM. by calling the Cary office at 919-233-0059. Currently, the Cary office, which is considered our main office, is open Monday through Friday 8-5 and offers a full range of the diagnostic services ordered by your Primary Care Physician or by one of our Cardiologists. At this time, our Benson office only offer consultation and follow up visits by appointment only as ordered by physicians at Eastern Carolina Medical Center.

We accept all types of PATIENT REFERRALS, including Primary Care Physician referrals, or other Specialist referrals, pre-operative clearance referrals as well as patient self-referrals. Many of our patients are established by word of mouth through our growing patient population and we appreciate those referrals as well. If you were to be taken to one of the area hospitals for a cardiac related condition, our physicians are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for on call consultation.

CARY CARDIOLOGY, PA gladly accepts MEDICARE, MEDICAID, and most MANAGED CARE PLANS. Please verify if your Insurance Plan is on our list of "Participating Insurance Plans" . Uninsured patients and Non-Participating Insurance Plans are also welcome and financial arrangements can be discussed prior to your visit. Budget Plans, cash, checks and all major Credit Card payments are always accepted.

INSURANCE CLAIMS will always be submitted on behalf of the office and hospital patients as long as the appropriate Insurance Cards are presented. Some insurance's require a PRIMARY PHYSICIAN REFERRAL to be in place BEFORE you arrive for your office visit. Please have that Physician's Name and Phone Number available when you call to schedule your appointment.

COPAYMENTS and DEDUCTIBLES are due at the time of service; we accept cash, checks and all major credit cards for your convenience. BALANCE DUE STATEMENTS will be mailed monthly and the balances are also collected at the office upon check out.

The Office Visit

What you need to bring:
  • Medications (any current prescription drug you are taking - please bring the original prescription bottle)
  • Medical Records (copies of records from primary physicians and test results- within last 12mo.)
  • Insurance Information (including your current insurance card)
  • If you are a prior cardiac patient establishing with our office, please bring copies of your most recent stress test, echocardiogram, catherization, stent, CABG operative note or pacemaker procedures with you.

What you can expect:

The following are instructions for your first visit with us:

  • Please try to come 10 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment. There is paperwork that must be completed. Please bring all of your insurance cards with you (Primary and Secondary). We must make a copy of them for billing purposes.
  • We would appreciate the completion of the registration form prior to your visit. Please bring them with you.
  • Bring all of your medicines with you.
  • We recommend that you call your insurance company prior to your visit to be sure of your coverage. We also advise you to check with them and verify that we are providers on your plan. The providers do change rather frequently, so it is best not to trust your provider directory.
  • Be prepared to pay your co-pay if you are required by your insurance company to do so. We accept cash, checks and all major credit cards.
  • We do our best to avoid lengthy waiting periods once you are ready for your appointment. Emergencies, however, are out of our control and they do occur. Our doctors must respond to emergencies as a priority and we hope that our patients can have an understanding of this circumstance. Our staff will attempt to call you as soon as they are told that your doctor may be late or even unable to see you that day. We make every attempt to reach you; however, it may be possible that you have already left for your appointment
  • In order to release or obtain any medical records for a patient the Medical Records Release Form is required
